  Coveting Africa

The European Desire; people, land, wealth

The Bishop's Stortford Museum has been given funding  by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund to create a project to mark the anniversary of the 1807 Abolition of Slavery Act.

The project, which examines attitudes to Southern Africa in the post-abolition era, incorpoartes a diverse programme of events.

The centre piece is an exhibition of 19th century photographs and artefacts from Southern Africa, which are not currently on display in the museum. The exhibition will arrive at the Thorleybourne Gallery in March 2008.

An Art Installation is currently on display in the museum's permanent African galleries. This installation - 'Pawns: Contemporary artists' look at post-abolition slavery' includes sculpture, graphic prints and paintings and is spread among the exhibits of the galleries. Participating artists include the sculptor John Farnham and Mike Dottridge, former director of Anti-Slavery International.

A mural on Britain's exploration of Africa, designed and embroidered by young people from Pinewood School and Middleton School  in Ware.

'Eye See'  - A photographic competition run by ICON, a local photographic group, in conjunction with the museum.

A diverse performance programme in the complex's theatre, including an African Drumming show and workshop, a performance of music by Elgar and a Capoeria performance and workshop.

Schools please contact the museum for more details on any of these events and activities.
