Highlights of the Rhodes Collection:

  • Cecil Rhodes military uniform dated 1877
  • A reconstruction of a middle class Victorian drawing room which has been personalised to the Rhodes family
  • 19th Century South African artefacts and weaponary including a Caryatid stool made for the chief of the Luba people and Masai Hippo Skin Shield
  • African instruments – which you can play, including drums and a xylophone

Highlights of the local history collection:

  • The Great Seal of Bishop’s Stortford (16th C) on loan from the British Museum
  • A Roman talking skeleton (nicknamed ‘Titus’)
  • The Thorley Stocks, which date back to medieval times
  • The Gilbey Family collection – the rags to riches story of prominent Bishop’s Stortford family the Gilbeys, founder of W&A Gilbey who became the largest drinks distribution company in the UK
  • Beautiful costumes including items from the Victorian era and the 1930s
  • The Bishop’s Stortford Town Mural – a beautiful embroidery created by 140 members of the Bishop’s Stortford Embroiderers Guild chronicling the history of the town
